St. Merlose Heating Plant

Straw plant secures large savings and green energy

The turnkey straw plant in St. Merlose has ensured large savings on straw and contributed to a reduction in CO2 emission.

consumers, some of which are large consumers. Until 1988 an oil based heating plant supplied the area, before the switch to straw was made. In early 2013 Linka was tasked with delivering a new, turnkey straw plant, which will supply the entire area with reliable, CO2 neutral heat. In addition to delivering the complete machine plant Linka was also responsible for building the boiler room and a 550 m2 straw storage.

Once again straw was chosen as fuel, since this is the cheapest source for heating. In addition straw is also a CO2 neutral heating source.

St. Merlose has an annual consumption of 3,000 tons of straw, all supplied by local farmers.

The plant

The straw plant at St. Merlose consists of a large 4,500 kW hot water boiler in 5-pass. The boiler is hereby designed for a better exploitation of the heat which results in better efficiencies and larger savings on fuel. In addition the boiler is designed for an operating pressure of 6 bars.

A straw crane ensures automatic fuel feed, where the straw bale is picked up from the storage and delivered into a safety box, also placed in the storage. The straw bale is then hydraulically moved into the cutter, which cuts off a slice that is fed into the boiler.

In addition a 1,000 m3 accumulator tank is installed. This can hold one million liters of water and hereby supply the entire area for 1-2 days, e.g. during service.

The automatic ash removal system transports the ash from the boiler to a 15 m3 ash container, placed outside the building. In addition a 4,500 kW oil boiler is installed as backup.
